Discover - Newham Stories

Celebrating heritage and culture through oral history

Discover Children’s Story Centre is a wonderful organisation based in Stratford, Newham inviting children and their families into the magical world of storytelling. Their project Newham Stories worked with local families and artists to explore their diverse heritage and culture through oral history. Working with three different local partners, Stratford Library, Populo Living and Alternatives Trust, the three different groups worked with artists Bonita Charles, Esther-Rennae Walker and Rea Malhotra Mukhtyar, and the Discover Story Builders, using all sorts of different creative practices for families to connect, share customs and pass on their stories to the next generation.

Led by Discover’s brilliant Community and Education Manager Rose Tsui, it was a privilege to step into such a welcoming place to document the celebration event for a project that had clearly been deeply impactful for all that took part, participants and facilitators alike. The project was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and you can also find the film in the exhibition space at Discover.
