Mariele Neudecker

For Now We See, an Invisible Dust commission.

For Now We See is a collaboration with artist Mariele Neudecker and Professor Alex Rogers, a marine biologist at Oxford University and found of the IPSO campaign to support the oceans. Commissioned by Invisible Dust - an organisation that brings together artists and scientists to create new works - the 8 films making up the video work was first exhibited at the 2013 British Science Festival in Newcastle in St Thomas’ Church.

The work utilises the 16 terabytes of video footage gathered by a remote operated vehicle that travelled to a depth of 3000m on the ocean floor on an expedition led by Alex Rogers. Even at the bottom of the world’s deepest oceans, we find the impact of humans, mostly from deep sea fishing, but also from the use of plastics and the way in which they are disposed of. It’s a fascinating glimpse into a world within our world that humans don’t get to travel to.

For Now We See is an Invisible Dust project curated by Alice Sharp, and developed with HOUSE, Brighton Festival 2013. Mariele Neudecker’s work is supported by NERC, Oxford University and Arts Council England.
