Rhythms of Fractals & Collective Movement
Bernhard Schimpelsberger, Dave Hewett & Angelika Manhart: UCL Performing Place
As part of UCL’s Performing Place programme, percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger worked with mathematicians Dave Hewett & Angelika Manhart on a collaboration investigating how the wave patterns they study mathematically could be translated into musical rhythms in their project Rhythms of Fractals and Collective Movement. Bernhard’s final composition for a single percussionist performer is informed by Dave and Angelika’s work, as well as ideas and conversations from workshops with Camden based mathematicians.
We had great fun filming in Bernhard’s studio, and it being particularly special as the first live music I’d heard in person since the Covid-19 lockdown.
Performing Place, produced by Sylvia Kluczewski, brought together live performance artists, Camden communities and researchers in the co-creation of live performance. It is part of the Performance Lab series, where artists, researchers and students explore how live performance can animate research – and how research can inspire art.
